Top Items To Consider When Ordering Country Woods Exposé Cornices

Country Woods Exposé wood cornices are the perfect topper over any Hunter Douglas window fashion or a great accent over drapery. The cornices match Hunter Douglas Country Woods® wood blinds and also provide an opportunity to offer coordinating mantel shelves and decorative shelves.

There are many items to consider when ordering a wood cornice. If you keep each of these Top 6 factors in mind, you will be sure that the cornice you receive will fit perfectly and will look beautiful.

1. Crown Extension
Each profile’s crown extension dimensions can be found in the Reference Guide (page WC-2) or in the Wood Cornice Sample Book. Before selecting a profile ask yourself how far will the crown extension project to the left or right or into the room? Will this measurement interfere with another window and cornice next to it or will it interfere with a wall or other obtrusion? By asking these questions you can be sure to choose the appropriate cornice profile that will fit in the room as well as aide in deciding the width and return lengths needed on the cornice.

2. Mounting Options
There are two mounting options to choose from: L-Brackets or a Wood Mounting Strip. You will be supplied with both methods with your cornice order if your returns are 4” or longer. If the returns are less than 4” you will only receive the wood mounting strip. When choosing your mounting style keep in mind the L-Brackets will project the cornice up 4-3/4” and the wood mounting strip will project the cornice up 1¾”.

If you need to mount the wood cornice above trim this measurement will also project the cornice up further than the measurements mention for the mounting styles, so you will need to make sure you order a cornice height that will cover the trim and mounting hardware. Depending on the mounting method you use, this projection measurement will also need to be taken into consideration when mounting above blinds, shades or drapery treatments.

You will also need to consider how you will mount additional window treatments underneath the cornice. To measure for placement of wood cornices over layered window treatments, we suggest first taking the overall width and depth of the layered window coverings when in the open position or where the widest measurement occurs. Then, add 2” to the width and depth per side to accommodate for the window covering movement and controls.  A longer return length is required for Pirouette® with UltraGlide® shadings on all 9” and 12” cornices, due to the forward cord operation.

3. Decorative Keystones
A keystone is standard on cornices that are wider than 84”, and are optional on cornices less than 84” in width. The standard keystone width is 8” but you can specify a custom keystone width from 8-1/8” to 28”. For wider cornices, specifying a wider keystone width may help you avoid the need to order a second required keystone.

To determine if additional keystones are required, subtract the keystone widths from total inside back bottom order dimensions, and divide by the number of cornice segments created by the keystones. If the number is greater that 84" an additional keystone is required. (Example: 168" cornice width – 8" standard keystone width = 160", 160“ ÷ 2 (cornice segments) = 80", only 1 keystone is required since 80" is less than 84").

The standard keystone positions are centered on the cornice for one keystone or spaced evenly apart for more than one keystone. Customized keystone positions can be requested for no additional charge but a drawing outlining the keystone positions must be submitted with the order. You can use the custom keystone position option to line up the keystones with mullions or trim in a home.

4. Carved Wood Appliqués
When appliqués are added to a cornice and there is not a keystone, the appliqué will be centered on the flat portion of the cornice’s profile. Appliqués added to a cornice when there is a keystone will have the appliqué(s) centered on each keystone’s face, as show in the picture. The keystone width will depend on the style of the appliqué chosen. Multiple appliqués and custom appliqué positions are allowed. A drawing indicating each appliqué position needs to accompany the order.

5. Dust Covers
All cornices, mantel shelves and decorative shelves automatically come standard with a top dust cover. You should order a bottom dust cover when you desire a more finished appearance, like for mantel shelves and decorative shelves.

Keep in mind when you order a bottom dust cover that you’ll need to mount the shelf using the wood mounting strip (projection 1-3/4”) and you’ll need to insert finishing nails through the top of the dust cover. Installation procedures for mantel shelves and decorative shelves are outlined in the Installation and Care Instructions that are included with each cornice.

6. Pricing Correctly
Make sure to take these factors into consideration when quoting the cost of the cornice to a consumer.

  • For safety reasons, Hunter Douglas recommends the following number of professional installers for each installation based on the cornice width:

    • Up to 84": 1 installer

    • 85" to 176": 2 installers

    • 177" to 268": 3 installers

    • 269" to 360": 4 installers

  • Add the Net Freight Surcharge for the appropriate width per cornice. These costs can be found on the bottom of the pricing pages in the Reference Guide.
