At Designer Blinds, all of our Hunter Douglas wood
blinds are made from 100% genuine hardwoods. Each piece of
wood — every slat— tells a story of natural history...how the
wood grew...weather and other environmental factors it endured...how
the wood was cut and dried. All of these elements give the
wood the distinguished characteristics that transforms each and
every Hunter Douglas Wood Blind handcrafted by Designer Blinds into
a truly splendid work of nature. Here are some examples of the
most common characteristics found randomly and considered acceptable
in all real wood blinds:
Grains
The direction
and regularity of the wood fibers can vary widely depending
on where each piece was cut from within the tree. The
type direction and density of the grain produce the unique
patterns and color variations that make each piece of wood
distinctive.
Flat
Grain Flat grain is seen when the board is cut in a right
angle to the growth rings. It appears as a swirling
elliptical grain pattern.
Tiger Striping Grain Tiger striping is a grain structure caused by
irregular growth due to temperature changes and other
environmental factors. It shows up in a cross grain
pattern resembling a tiger's stripes.
Grain Change Grain change is a place in the grain structure from
which a branch once grew, causing the growth rings to skew
in different direction on a single piece of wood.
Knots
Knots are formed when a branch intersects into the vertical
growth of the tree.
Pin Knots
A pin knot is simply a small knot that is less than a
quarter-inch in diameter
Burl
Figures
A burl figure is a grain pattern of swirls or small
circles in the wood, about the size of a dime. They
are caused by irregular growth of the outer surface of the
tree.
Mineral
Deposits
A mineral deposit is a dark brown to black streak in
the wood caused from fungus that once grew in the tree.
Usually mineral deposits are solid and are the same
thickness as the surrounding wood.
Rustics
The wood used in Country Woods® Select™ Rustic wood
blinds is chosen to capture as many of the natural
characteristics of wood as possible. Here are some
other characteristics that are commonly found in the
Rustics.
More
Knots & Open Hole Knots
More knots, up to an inch and a half in diameter will be
found in Rustics blinds. Open holes up to an
eighth-inch in diameter may also be present on these knots.
Sugar
Deposits
A sugar deposit is a dark brown streak with a softer
texture than the surrounding wood. Sugar deposits are
caused by sap being trapped in a tree.
Unlimited
Mineral Deposits
In Rustics there will typically be more of the same type of
irregularities described above, including frequent mineral
deposits.
